We had really short classes today! Time enough to complete your graph and conclusion ready to type up on monday in the computer lab. Science can be really messy as my 4th period found out this morning while running their trials!! I have great video to post also showing the concentration and focus you showed during the trials. I am now really excited to see the results of what you did!
Again some fabulous focus on the writing the procedures. i was very impressed by your attention to detail and determination to include everything you needed. Be careful when doing your diagram. This diagram is simply pictures of the materials list. Your diagram needs to show how your investigation is set up. imagine taking a picture of your set up before you run the trials.
First thing today you all did a conclusion that I will grade and enter as a quiz. If you are not happy with your score you can re-do the conclusion until you get it right. Once that was finished you all came up with great questions that you can investigate with your new table group. Some of the questions are very creative! Apologies for posting the flip NOT as a pdf yesterday. I added it below if you were absent. These are the supplies you may use to write your testable investigation question.
Your concentration today was fantastic! you did some hard work analyzing your conclusions for accuracy and for rigor. Well done! I have posted one of the conclusions that I think is a good example so if you are still unclear take a look at this one.
Well as we analyzed the data it semms that we were not able to state that gum chewing caused increased test scores. You all gave examples of variables we were not able to control and when it came down to it bias was a big part of the results. Oh well I am sure mr Barber would have said no anyhow! One other thing NO NAME ASSIGNMENTS ... you will find them in the late tray.
I graded all your conclusions today and realize that there is still some work to do there! When we finish the discussion we will take a couple of days to really hone your conclusion writing practice. Below is a conclusion written by lillian. Read it through and think of the RAPS.
The graph today presented you all with some challenges! There was a lot of data to graph, plus I am holding you accountable for following the graphing rules. Tomorrow we will get to discuss whether we think our class data is valid and reliable data and figure out if we have any bias in our data. This is our very complicated graph! Can you identify the graphing rules that hailey is following?
What a great job today! we wrote the procedures together with a huge amount of help from the 2nd period. Running trials was great fun plus we tried to control as many variables as possible. I know that we did not control everything so I am looking forward to that discussion tomorrow. One of the trials with gum! One of the trials without gum!
We critically reviewed 2 articles about the benefits of gum chewing on a student's performance. It was interesting to predict what Mr. Barber might say to students who suggest this research as evidence for chewing gum on tests! As a class you decided that Mr Barber would require a lot more data if he was to decide to allow gum in a testing situation! You are going to carry out an investigation to maybe provide that data: How does chewing gum affect the number of correct math problems in 1 minute?
