Firstly sorry for not posting yesterday. I was so excited about my birthday that I left school early at 3:30pm without posting!

So today we finished the investigation write up and completed the first journal check. Please look to the important documents tab to find an electronic copy of the journal check if you were absent. We spent a long time talking about the conclusion and in particular the final conclusive statement. Please read the 2 conclusions in the pictures below and try to identify the RAPS.

Running trials

9/12/2012

Some teams were able to run their trials today. Tomorrow we will finish the trials and continue with the rest of the investigation write-up. I was really impressed by your procedure writing.

This is one of the trials for "How does the size of the magnet affect the time it takes to pick up all the paperclips?"

This trial is for the responding variable of number of paperclips.

And they are off!!!!... our first investigation is underway. As I walked around the school today I also saw the 8th grade doing their first investigation.
Our first investigation is a little goofy but has brought up all kinds of questions about controlled variables and investigation design. Tomorrow we will take intentional time to write the procedures before running the trials.
Picture
This is not too easy to see but your investigation should look like this in your journal. Sub headings, correctly ordered and your diagram following the ABCD rule.
Do you notice I have forgotten the because statement?

Questions....????

9/10/2012

Today we spent sometime talking about what makes a good investigation question. We also identified questions that we could answer by getting information from scientists, the internet, books or from other people. we will focus the next few weeks on investigation questions.
Below is the pink sheet we worked on in class.

Hopefully you did not all go home and tell your parents that you can have as much salt as you want!!!! remember the point of the article is that as scientists we shouls ask questions and look for the evidence!
Have a great weekend. Next week we will be doing a number of investigations to oil the rusty brain!

Reflecting on the difference between the initial design and the final design it seems that all but 1 group made changes to the initial design. This of course is not unusual but is what happens all the time. Changes were made based on experiences with the materials and of course trial and error as you were building the bridge.
Well done everyone who met the challenge!

The second half of class saw you drawing a scientific diagram based on the ABCD rules. This diagram you turned in to be scored.

ABCD...........

9/5/2012

There was mixed success today trying to build the structures using someone's final diagram. You all did a great job of recognizing what a good scientific diagram needs.

Accurate (include measurements, show things as they are)
Big (fill the space)
Colorful (or shaded)
Detailed (label all parts with horizontal words)

Tomorrow we will again practice a scientific diagram... get ready!

You did your first jornal entry today.. YEAH!!! Today was a quick write thinking about the characteristics of a scientist. as we noticed they were characteristics that each one of you shared.. you are all scientists!
The teamwork challenge was to build a structure as tall as possibel. A few groups were sucessful but not too many.. :(  you may be more successsful with tomorrow's challenge.
Take a look at Christian and Madison's tall structure. Not only was it tall but it was also very stable.
