Field Study Report 2013
Over the next week you will report your findings from the Field Study you have been working on since April 3rd. During this time you have made a total of 7 visits to the Frog Pond and gathered biotic and abiotic data during 6 of these visits.
In this blog entry I will include a number of documents that will help you to format your field study report. Please do not get confused with documents from last year! You may choose to use these document or not. The documents are to help guide you in formatting your report but you can choose to format your work in a different way. It is important however to follow the rubric to be sure you have included all the required information.
As well as the documents, your other resources are the daily blogs I write on the field study days. Attached to the blogs are pictures and videos that will help you to remember what we did on each field study visit. There is also an excellent book in the classroom that you can use, POND LIFE A Golden Guide.
if you have any questions you may ask in class during our work time or you may e-mail questions to me and I will respond within the same day.

May 31st Lab Day 2012
This is your final lab day!!! Today you may print your work if you are ready. Anything you have not completed is now homework.
You must show me your work before you print. I am not checking for content. I am checking that you are not wasting paper or ink!!!!!!!
Here is what you should be working on today:
1. Complete your organism field study notes.
2. Type out your physical data table.
3. Complete the food web.
4. Change to rubric- answer 2 of the questions generated in class.

May 29th Food Web 2012
Here is the food web that you all created from the research you have done so far.
When you do your food web for the project you can use this one to get you started. Be sure to connect all the organisms to show the flow of energy in the system.

May 25th Lab day 2012
Is this the large mystery bug we found yesterday?
Today you should be finishing the organism field notes pages. remeber to include mostly what you saw. you may supplement the information from any websites you find but be careful not to plagerize!
i posted the physical Data under the important documents tab.
What do the organisms eat? Here is what we discovered
Tadpoles eat algae
Diving beetles eat other insects
Whirligig beetles eat soft worms and larvae
Caddis fly eats
Waterboatman eats plants and algae
Damselfly eats small flying bugs in the air
Pond skater eats mosquito larvae and dead insect on the surface of the water.
Pacific tree Frog eats spiders, beetles and other insects.

It was interesting for me to see the changes in the pond from the morning to the afternoon. In the morning there really was not much going on but by the afternoon we saw so many organisms!! the picture on the left is one of the new organisms we saw that I can not yet identify. If you know what it is please let me know so we can tell everyone else. This bug was under a log, covered in silt and was about 4cm long!
Today we also saw:
lots of baby waterboatmen
damselfly
Diving beetle
Big tadpoles
Small green frog
DO is not any better!

Field Study Write Up May 18th 2012
In the lab today you will continue writing up the Field Study work. Here are the things you can work on.
1. Finish typing the observations
2. research and type up the organism field notes.
3. Create a data table for the abiotic data we are gathering.
The picture to the left shows some ideas of how you can put your work into a book. They are on the stereoscope cupboard in the classroom. If you have kept on top of the fridays you should have minimum work to complete at home!
The document below is a template to help you write your organism field notes.

Field Study Project Assigned 2012
We have been working on the field study project since March 27 and now it is time to bring together all the information and begin to analyze it all!
The project assesses student's understanding of WA state standard for science EALR 4 Ecosystems ,The Flow of Energy Through Ecosystems and EALR 2 inquiry.
We have worked in class every monday on field observations and each Friday we have been in the lab to type up the work. It would be a good idea to come to school with a flash drive so you can finish what you do not get done in class time.
You will present the work as a book/ field guide/ journal which is due june 8th. There are examples in class to look at.

Frog Pond Ecosystem Write-up continued. May 11th 2012
Today you will continue to type up your observations from the frog pond. You have 5 observations that you need to type. Please open the google doc link under important documents and links to find the rubric that you need to follow. (observation rubric)
Also I want you to research the organisms we have in the pond and type up FIELD NOTES. you will make a good copy of 1 producer and 4 consumers

Frog Pond Ecosystem Work day May 4th 2012
Today you will continue to type up your observations from the frog pond. you have 3-4 observations that you need to type. Please open the google doc link under important documents and links to find the rubric that you need to follow. Also I want you to start researching the organisms we have in the pond.
The Organisms we have seen so far in the pond are;
Frog
Caddis fly larva
pond Skater
diving beetle
water spider
various plants! - use the photos to help identify them.
- You will type up the 3-4 observations you have completed. Each observation should follow the rubric and be about half a page. you can add photos from the google doc collection.
- Next you need to research the organisms you have seen in the pond. Use the 'field Notes " Rubric to find out what information you need to know. Make a new document for this titled Organism research and save it in your frog Pond folder.

Pond Observation #4 2012
04/30 or 05/01
Today we did our 4th pond observation and added into our data collection some chemical information!
Jake brought his camera and took some pictures for us. i was surprised to see that the frog was active today!

Frog Pond Observations 2012
Everyone has made two observations at the frog pond so far. Make sure that you keep those observations safe. You are going to be using them for a project that you will be working on for the rest of the trimester! :)
