Gathering data

1/31/2013

Period 4 ironed out the kinks in our procedures.. Thanks!!!!

All of you were very intentional in gathering accurate data. I am really excited to draw the graph and write the conclusion.

Today we wrote the procedures for the investigation. Periods 3 and 4 had their procedures checked by a peer group. This was a really interesting exercise!

Period 1 pooled their knowledge and after practicing the procedure writing on their own we wrote a class set which we think is pretty good.

Warm up number 2 involved a different speed unit. I noticed that many of you were forgetting the algebra conventions. Look at the example below. This example follows the rules.
After the warm up you had time to finish your posters then a number of you presented your work. Nicely done!
We began the pre-lab write up for the speed investigation. We will finish that tomorrow.

How did you do on today's warm up?

Here is the one for tomorrow. if you were not sure how to do today's problem look ahead and work on this one to be ready.

We then worked on a poster. See the word document attached if you were absent.

You all did a journal check and at the same time reflected on the learning targets we are working towards. I will be saving these for you.

We then finished the junkyard wars program and calculated the speeds of both the teams.

Today you learned about the rules you need to follow when solving an equation. You practiced with a few really easy problems so you have the method down for when the problems get harder!

The picture shows a fabulous example of a student who followed the rules.
1. Write the equation
2. Substitute with units
3. Solve
4. Box or circle the answer.

We will practice using the equation when we calculate the speeds of the two teams in the Junkyard Wars episode.. mechanical monsters!!!

Hard brain work today!!!!

I heard a lot of people say "I thought this was science! ". As you have discovered there can be a lot of science in math and today you were doing the hard work of finding the algorithm for calculating speed!

I know we were not going to write a discussion but the results were so fabulous that we had to talk about them!

We noticed that teams who had data like the one on the picture , made a great attempt to control as many variables as possible! The graph line shows a direct, positive relationship between the distance the roadster is pulled back and the distance the roadster travels.

For the second half of class I presented you with a couple of problems that could only be solved by knowing how long a journey took.

Please note that I have not attached a pdf today as the ActivInspire program did not want to cooperate with me.

Today you finished the graph and conclusion for the investigation. If you were absent today be prepared to have this ready to analyze on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend. I will be at Hyak this Sunday and Monday so say hi!!

Running Trials

1/17/2013

I was thrilled to see how intentional you were in your work today. I listened to students scrutinizing their procedures to be sure they were precise. As I watched you run trials you were being as accurate as you possibly could. I wonder if your data is going to reflect your accuracy?
