Friday Goals!

5/31/2013

Today is the last day to work on the Field Study report. Here is what you need to do:
1. Work on the illustrated food web.
2. Make sure you have a design proposal for dissolved oxygen including a diagram.
3. Complete your cover page.

You may put your report together using the supplies at the back of the room, however the supplies are fairly limited.

the report is due in class on Monday morning unless you took the OEC for algebra, your report is due on Tuesday.

have a great day.

I am really looking forward to reading your report and especially your ideas to solve the dissolved oxygen problem.

Thursday Goals

5/30/2013

Today is the last opportunity for lab time. It is important that you get everything typed up and printed out.  You can store your work on the class shelf in our room or take it home to work on your report. DO NOT SCRUNCH YOUR WORK IN YOUR PACK. IT SHOULD NOT LOOK LIKE THE DOG HAS EATEN IT!!!! :)

Today's Goals
1. Finish typing and print out:
    a. Introduction
    b. Field study observation notes
    c. Dissolved oxygen proposal.
2. Type or be prepared to hand write:
    a. The food web (illustrated where possible)
    b. The cover with illustration, title and name

On Friday you will have an opportunity to finish all the illustrations and hand written work. I will also leave you with some supplies to bind your report. This will be minimal.

I am really excited to see what you submit!

Work hard today
.

Wednesday Goals

5/29/2013

Great job yesterday being focused and sticking to the goals! if you did not finish yesterdays work please make sure you do that today as well as today's tasks!

For today you will spend time doing some research so that you can complete the food web and the engineering design problem. Tomorrow will be your last day in the computer lab to finish any typing and research then Friday you will put the report together.

So here are your goals for today:

1. Finish typing all introduction, field observation notes and data table..
2. Look at the engineering problem and begin the research for this.
        - State the problem
        - Research the problem
        - Suggest 2 possible ideas
        - Make a proposal to solve the problem

Bring your journal to the computer lab so you can record your research.

Update!
Period 3 did the research so you can build a food web! you will find the information with all the other documents under the Frog Pond Ecosystem tab.

Field Study report

5/28/2013

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend and are ready to get to work in the final 2 weeks of school.

Here are your goals for today.
1.  Type up the introduction and save to your H drive.
2.  Type your Field Study Observation notes. Pay attention to the rubric.
3.  Open and save the data table file , begin to type up your data.

Don't forget that you do not have time to goof around during this work time if you are to avoid homework.
Tomorrow we will work on the food web and the Engineering problem. Tonight you could be looking up the organisms to find out what organism eats what.

Today we are starting the Field Study Report. Here is your goal for today:

  • Complete the introduction to the project.
  • Begin the research for the food web. For each organism, what does it eat and what eats it?

Please remember that the outline I have posted is a suggested outline. If you did not observe a community interaction then write about something else you did observe.

Today we  talked about the limiting factors in the arctic ecosystem. Do you remember what the main limiting factor is for this ecosystem? It is not cold temperatures!

limiting factors

5/20/2013

If every egg that the adult female frog lays at the beginning of the season becomes an adult frog , imagine what the pond would look like!!!!

This is known in ecology as the reproductive potential of the organism and for our chorus frog you calculated this to be 320 frogs in a year or 640 for the 2 female frogs in the pond!

Of course his does not happen so that factors that cause limits to this growth are known as limiting factors.

Today we also briefly talked about the Pond Ecosystem write up that we will begin in class on Friday. Plus we went to the pond to gather data one more time and to sketch the pond for the project.

10% Rule

5/17/2013

What a crazy week!!! i am sure glad the the MSP testing is finished so we can get back to some science!!!!!

Today we did stretch our brains a little and think about the 10% rule.

What do you remember?

Is it possible for 1000kg of algae biomass to support a poulation of gulls with 1,00kg biomass? If so how, if not why not?

Trophic Levels

5/13/2013

Picture
Can you  explain the science behind the title of this book?
We are going to look now in more detail at the light energy that is captured by the sun and how this is transferred through the ecosystem as chemical energy.

We also took the Photosynthesis pre-test. The test will be Wednesday.
