We had a fabulous school day today. My enrichment class enjoyed hot cocoa while we tried to finish our book. They will finish it over the break as we did not quite make it.
All first period classes took their vocab test. We then headed off to the theatre for our annual viewing of Christmas Carol. Thanks to the movie theatre staff we all enjoyed popcorn, soda and the movie. Back to school and our final event of the day was the wonderful TFMS choirs entertaining us with their music. Mr. Wenman's enrichment groups also performed for us. A fabulous way to start the holidays!

We will begin in the new year looking at "what makes things move?"

Happy holidays everyone!

Today we finished off the tracks graph and compared the two graphs to identify constant speed and acceleration.
The test was handed back and anyone wanting to do a re-take needs to be ready to do this tomorrow:
1. Lunchtime or after school December 20th
2. Bring your test with corrections in a different color plus your notecard.

Our final task today was a journal check which was turned in. If you were absent pick up a sheet from the organiser and turn it nto the late tray or print one out from the document below.

TEST

12/16/2011

Today was a short class time due to the Raven Social! All we got done today was the test. Well done everyone for staying focused and trying your best.

Acceleration

12/15/2011

Do you know the difference between constant speed and acceleration? This is what we worked on today. We also made a study card for the test tomorrow.

The Iditerod

12/13/2011

Today we practiced calculating speeds using the Iditerod for examples. We calculated the average  speed of Susan Butchers 1986 winning dog sled team. It turned out to be 4.03 miles/hr which seemed slow until we realised that the total time of 279 hrs over 1125 miles did not take into account the amount of rest time the team had. Tomorrow we will calculate the speed of the dog sled team while on the trail. To find out more about the Iditerod go to  http://www.iditarod.com/

Today we worked on creating a story and then the graphs to match the story. We really liked the example below. The graphs match the story perfectly and we liked the illustration too! This good copy was due at the end of class.
Picture

This morning I walked my dog along the neighborhood.trail for 15 minss. We stopped for 10 mins to play in the river. To get dry we ran for 5 mins. On a short cut to my street we met my friend and we walked slowly the rest of the way home.

Position Graphs

12/9/2011

Today we continued looking at how to graph motion by focusing on position graphs. This is a graph that has position (x) on the y axis thus showing where an obect in motion is located at any point in time.
The pink sheet was due at the end of class. (p. 45-46 in the lab notebook).

Today we spent a lot of time interpresting graphs and creating graphs. We mainly looked at distance V time graphs (speed graphs). it was fun to hear the stories and try to represent the stories as graphs on the white boards.
The flip chart will show you some position graphs but we did not spend much time on this. that will come tomorrow.

Today we used the data from the cold walk to make a graph that represented the journey we too. Each leg of the journey on the graph shows a different speed. the steeper the line on the graph the faster the leg of the journey.
Using this graph what was the fastest leg of our journey?

Today we went out in the cold, crisp air and took a trip from the class to the track and back. We tracked how long each of the 3 legs of the journey took. Back in class we calculated the speeds of each leg of the journey then prepared to represent the journey as a graph.
Think about trips you have taken. How were the trips broken up into different 'legs'?

Leg 1 of the journey from Class to the track.

Leg 2 of the journey around the track.

Leg 3 of the journey back to school.
