Today we analyzed sand using the Wentworth Scale. We used a  sand from Arizona, just east of the Grand Canyon and a sand that we used to make the sanstone and limestone.

Today we modeled the erosion process and the formation of sandstone!
Our sandstone was deposited in a dry environment and fossils of reptiles were formed in the sandstone!

Closer observation revealed that the Limestone rocks contain particles of other materials, sand, crystals and other minerals. Today you made a limestone like the coquina Limestone that containes fragments of shells , plus sand and clay. your table group decided whether you were making a limey limestone or a sandy limestone!

Today you had a great time imagining you were fish swiming in an ancient sea!

As you were swiming you exhaled Carbon Dioxide which reacted with the minerals in the water to cause calcium carbonate to precipitate out of the water and form a sediment on the sea bed!

We realized today that we really do not have all
the pieces to the puzzle! Here are some of the questions you still
have....

    - How old are the rocks?
    -How old are the fossils?
-How did the plateau build up and how did the canyon break down?
    - Why is Limesone in two places?
    - How did the layers form?
    - What rocks are lower than the number 4?
    - Is the earth getting bigger?

These are all amazing questions that scientists have asked and are still asking. Hopefully we will be able to answer some if not all of these questions over the next few weeks.
